Broken Arrow police arrested a 35-year-old man involved in a nearly 11 hour-long standoff that ended in a house fire early on Thursday morning.
The standoff began after police were called to the scene of a home invasion on Wednesday after a man found an armed stranger inside of his home. According to police, when they arrived at the home near East Kenosha Street and South 257th East Avenue at around 5:30 p.m. the suspect had barricaded himself inside.
Officers deployed tear gas and pepper balls into the home but were unable to get the suspect out.
The standoff carried on into Wednesday night and early into Thursday morning and the Broken Arrow Special Operations Team was called to the scene.
According to Broken Arrow police, when Special Operations Officers attempted to enter the home around 2:50 a.m. on Thursday they were shot at by the suspect.
Officers said that the suspect, who was hiding in the attic of the home at the time, began to light fires inside the home before eventually attempting to escape at around 4 a.m.
Police said they apprehend the suspect after he attempted to flee the burning home and he was taken into police custody.
Broken Arrow Fire officials arrived on the scene and were able to contain the blaze.
According to officers, the suspect was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries.
