Police said the homeowner came home Wednesday evening and found someone armed inside the house.

Officers deployed teargas and pepper balls to get him to come out of the house.

They said the suspect shot at officers at one point and then started lighting fires in the attic.

The flames quickly spread throughout the home, and authorities said it is a total loss.

As the fire burned, police said the suspect tried to escape but they caught him.

Jayson Moffitt has lived in the area for more than 25 years, and he said he brought his parents up last week to look at buying at this house.

"I came by to just take a look and was shocked that it was the house we just walked through," Moffitt said.

Officers said the suspect was treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation.
