Several Tulsa charities got a call last week they won’t soon forget. Those calls were about some large donations that will do a lot of good.

Part of the Amazon fortune has been directed into four Tulsa charities, including a $1.5 million donation to Meals on Wheels of Metro Tulsa.

MacKenzie Scott announced the donations as part of a $4.1 billion dollar pledge this year. The Tulsa charities found out last week.

“This gift of $1.5 million dollars is probably the largest unrestricted gift we've received in our 50 year history,” said Calvin Moore, the CEO of Meals on Wheels Metro Tulsa.

Moore said the money will help them expand services for the long term, while supporting the increasing demand for their services during the pandemic.

“Since the beginning of COVID-19 our numbers have seen dramatic increases, in fact the number of seniors we serve, unique clients, has almost doubled," said Moore.

The Scott donations will benefit Meals on Wheels, the YWCA of Tulsa, the YMCA of Greater Tulsa and the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. The YMCA and Food Bank would not reveal the amount of their gifts. The YWCA did not respond to requests for comment.
