Saturday marked the first day of Kwanzaa and though celebrations are expected to be smaller this year, they are no less meaningful for those who celebrate.

One of the largest celebrations of African heritage, the seven-day holiday focuses on the importance of family and community.

Kwanzaa centers around seven principles including: unity, responsibility, purpose, creativity and faith.

Many say given the challenges of 2020, this year, the holiday's principles take on an even deeper meaning.

"I feel like this is a great way to just come together, even in the midst of chaos," said Naaayele Ababi, a performer with the Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation.

Kwanzaa concludes on January 1st.
