Wagoner Police arrested a man they said stabbed his roommate nearly a dozen times.
Wagoner Police said they caught the suspect, Chris Hathcoat, after he returned to his home in Wagoner. The victim has been identified as Anthony Hellinger. His brother Dale Hellinger said Anthony is in his 60's, and that the two are long-time family friends.
Dale said he knows Hathcoat's mental health has deteriorated over the years but says that's still no excuse for violence.
"He stabbed him in the back, and he should be prosecuted. Whatever made him do it, it doesn't make any difference," Dale said.
Wagoner Police Detective Benjamin Blair said Anthony was stabbed over ten times and was critically injured with brain bleeds and a collapsed lung.
"Mr. Hallinger said he was laying in his bed watching television, said that Chris walked in, didn't really say anything, had a crazed look on his face and just started hitting him. He didn't know why," Blair said. "He does have a chest tube. We do know that one of the stabs penetrated his skull into his brain."
Both Detective Blair and Hathcoat's mother Destiny Hathcoat, hope Chris gets treatment before it's too late.
"You know he's got mental problems. He hears voices, and it was talking to him. After he got out of prison this time, he was hearing voices and they were getting really strong. It was like they took over him," Destiny said.
"We don't need a mental-health police officer incident," Blair said. "You know where it's somebody going through a mental break and force our hand to do something a police officer never wants to do."
Police said the victim is expected to get out of the hospital in a few days and should recover.
