The Tulsa Public Schools Board of Education discussed the decline in COVID-19 cases in Tulsa County and the possibility of returning to in-person learning before the end of the month.

Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist announced the district was considering going back to in-person classes before the end of the month but didn’t mention a specific date.

Tulsa Public Schools said last week, they had 23 positive cases, most of which are staff members.

The district said they are still seeing the same staffing levels right now, but overall, the county has been seeing a steady decline in COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks.

TPS Parent Maren Lively said her son is a second grader at Eisenhower and he really wants to go back to in person classes. She said there have been a lot of empty promises about going back to in person classes.

“Time and time again, statements have been issued and openings have been promised and here we are nearly a year later without more than six days of instruction for elementary students,” said Lively.

Lively said probable lawsuits are coming the district’s way because students haven’t had access to buildings that ultimately taxpayers are paying for.

“They’ve managed to learn how to have in-person meetings for the school board and we are still not in the classroom. Surely after a year we would’ve learned how to do in person learning safely for everybody,” said Lively.

“Everyone here has not stopped working to get students back in school in person,” Tulsa Public Schools Board President Stacey Woolley said. “We’ve managed the conditions in our control and now the conditions outside of our control seem to be giving us an opportunity for possible revision.”

Dr. Gist said the decision to go back early is in the hands of the school board. They say this will possibly be considered at their February 16 meeting.
