A northeastern Oklahoma woman is starting a movement to support cancer patients and their families on World Cancer Day.
Aisha Patterson said the movement starts with getting a marker and writing the word "cancer" on the bottom of your shoe and posting a picture online using #WalkingOnCancer21.
“To my warrior brothers and sisters keep fighting to not lose faith. To put your fight face on every day just walk in that straight," said Aisha Patterson. “I was breastfeeding my son, found some lumps, and went to the doctor and found out that I had stage II breast cancer. Biggest shock of my life.”
Patterson was diagnosed the week before Thanksgiving, Now, Aisha is about six weeks into her chemotherapy treatment and life for the Patterson family has been turned upside down.
“Being home all the time, homeschooling the kids, it’s just an adjustment; so, I’m just taking it day-by-day," said DJ Patterson, Aisha's Husband.
Patterson said she is leaning on family and friends for support during the biggest battle of her life. She said one thing in her life she can control, is writing the word "cancer" on the bottom of her shoe.
“Throughout the day as we’re walking, we’re just going to be thinking about walking all over cancer. Stomping on it. Dancing on it. Twirling on it; just showing cancer you’re little on your day," said Patterson.
Her husband, DJ, and all of their kids have the letters written in bold on the bottom of their shoes.
"Even on the days that you don’t want to, that’s okay. It’s okay: you don’t have to be strong all the time, but I want them to know that I’m linking arms with them," said Patterson.
She said she hopes this movement continues to grow, and people will remember the message on World Cancer Day again next year.
