Experts said if you lose power and plan to use a portable generator, the generator should always be operated outside of your home. The exhaust can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

Experts said if you lose power and plan to use a portable generator, the generator should always be operated outside of your home. The exhaust can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

Firefighters also say now is the time to check your smoke detectors and install one if you don’t have one.

If you are running a space heater, keep it at least three feet from anything in your home and make sure it’s plugged into the wall not an extension cord.
