Creek County road crews are working hard to get everything plowed, but these bitter cold temperatures are making things difficult. They say their biggest priority is making sure emergency responders can make it to where they're going safely.
Last Tuesday, the county started running in 24 hour shifts to sand the roadways and prepare for the winter weather events. They’re also plowing parking lots of county buildings like the courthouse, sheriffs office and health department because the county must continue to do business as usual.
They said one of the biggest challenges is managing equipment when it gets this cold outside. They said the gas in their gas tanks can freeze or gel up and equipment breaks down easier.
Creek County District One Commissioner Newt Stephens said so far, they've put more than 300 tons of sand on streets in the past week.
“We've got 970 square miles of Creek County for all three districts trying to manage that so we ask for patience,” said Stephens. "We cover all that we can as quick as we can. We were out plowing last night and you looked in your rear view mirror and it would just come in behind us.”
Stephens said they're planning to have sand trucks running Monday night to help with slick spots and hills around the county as they prepare for the next winter storm headed our way.
