When the snow started coming down last week, Dover students looked at the one student with the most snow experience.

“Everyone came to me when the weather changed, you know,” Dover senior Joriaun Caldwell said. ‘You’re from Canada,’ you know.”

Ottawa to be exact.

Caldwell’s father is from Dover and the family decided to leave the land of poutine and return to the prairie about eight years ago.

“It was definitely a cultural change,” Caldwell said. “Here in Dover, I just live here by myself. A bunch of farm animals, goats, sheep, dogs.”

Caldwell scored his 1,000th career point on Feb. 2. He’s the first Longhorn in recent history to reach the plateau.

“It was exciting,” Caldwell said. “When I hit that free throw, everybody went crazy in the crowd.”

The achievement was made more special when you consider playing a full season during a pandemic was no layup.

For a program that has seen some low single-digit win seasons recently, and for this small-town community, everyone can take pride in the achievement.

“Everybody knows everybody, so that becomes a bigger deal, and they can say, ‘Oh, one of our kids scored 1,000 points, and that’s big,” Dover boys basketball coach Aaron Norton said.

Dover’s prolific scorer has his sights set on playing at the next level.

“It’s always been a dream. Always,” Caldwell said. “It’d mean a lot to me.”

Caldwell said he’s already had talks with a couple schools about playing college basketball.
