Governor Stitt said he stands behind all of the decisions he has made thus far during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“A lot of people were pushing us to do more and I kept saying we are going to make the right decisions at the right time based on the facts in Oklahoma,” said Stitt.

Stitt issued an emergency declaration for the state on March 15, 2020. He said his goals from day one were to protect the health and lives of Oklahomans, keep kids in school and keep our economy going.

“The longer you shut down the economy is not a light switch and say it is over and you flip it back on,” said Stitt.

He began opening the state back in June of 2020 in phases.

“We have a 1.6-billion-dollar surplus this year when other states are facing huge deficits,” said Stitt.

Ove the past year masks became controversial. Many have pleaded that Gov. Stitt put in a statewide mask mandate, which he said he didn’t believe in because he wanted cities to have local control.

“I don’t believe you can have one set of rules based on one set of facts and make all the decisions,” Stitt said. “There is a lot more that goes into it.”

He said over the past year he has also learned a lot. He said he really realized the importance of having a talented team to make tough decisions.

“It is really about leadership and bringing people together,” said Stitt.

Looking ahead he has said he is hopeful that Oklahoma will be able to get back to normal by the summer.

“I want Oklahomans to know that it is not going to be very long before everyone who wants a shot can get one,” said Stitt. “The supply is about to outpace the demand.”
