EMBARK is taking on a multimillion-dollar public transit project that would be the first of its kind in Oklahoma City.

On Thursday, the public has the chance to weigh in on the progress.

Once completed, the Bus Rapid Transit or BRT would run from the downtown business district to the south side of Lake Hefner.

EMBARK says the nine and a half mile route would come within a half-mile of 40,000 residents and 91,000 jobs.

The project will create the region’s first rapid transit system and it will cost an estimated $28.9 million.

Half of the cost will be paid with a single federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The remainder of the costs will be paid for by a smaller federal grant and local funding sources.

On Thursday, EMBARK plans to give an update on the progress, preliminary plans, and renderings at two virtual town halls.

The first will begin at noon. The second begins at 5:30 p.m.

Those participating can ask questions or make comments.

The project timeline has construction beginning in 2022. EMBARKS expects the service to launch in October of 2023.
