The Greenwood Art Project wants to invite the public to take part in the first two art installations by its commissioned artists.
“Greenwood…A Trilogy in Reflection” by Katherine Mitchell will open at the Vernon AME Church and draws on inspiration from the site itself. It will open on March 31 from 12 to 6 p.m.
Tulsa native Yielbonzie Johnson’s “Lives on the Line” project draws on memory sites through Greenwood. It will open April 4 at the Church of the Restoration from 12:30 to 6 p.m.
“From our Call to Artists in the summer of 2019, to the selection of artists in the summer of 2020, to the spring of 2021, when the artists have prepared their works for exhibition, we invite the Tulsa community to participate in this event. One hundred years after the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, the Greenwood Art Project is advancing healing in our community through art,” Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum said.
A Tulsa native, Johnson is an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister who organized the Church of the Restoration where his piece will be presented. Mitchell has taught at both Tulsa Community College and Southern Nazarene University, turning her jewelry making studies at TCC into her own small business.
