A Tulsa theatre that houses the longest running stage production in the country announced Tuesday it will soon reopen.
Tulsa's Spotlight Theatre said it's grateful it has the opportunity to reopen on May 1.
Board members said this theatre has a rich history in Tulsa, and they are making sure it has a rich future, too.
"Actors have to act, they just do that and it's very frustrating to not be up here," said actor Bob Roberts.
Roberts performs in "The Drunkard and Olio," the longest running stage production in the country. He said it's been frustrating not being on stage and he's thrilled to return to the Spotlight.
While many venues have struggled during the pandemic, Roberts is grateful the theatre has the chance to open.
"There are so many businesses and there's so many small theatre companies and so many venues that haven't survived the last year, so we have worked hard to make sure we would still be here," Roberts said.
While closed, the theatre has been improving spaces like the green room and dressing rooms, as well as expanding its children's theatre program.
Board member Travis Guillory said they want to make sure the Spotlight Theatre is in Tulsa for the years to come.
"We knew had an opportunity when we were on this infinite hiatus, it felt like, to look at our organization and see how we could come back bigger and better," Guillory said.
Guillory said he hopes people visit the Spotlight and find reasons to keep coming back.
"We want as many people to come and experience this Tulsa gem as possible," Guillory said.
The Spotlight will be at limited capacity and following other CDC guidelines as well. The official reopening will be May 1. The theatre is also an event space.
