The Washington County community gathered Saturday to honor the life of Cpl. Kyle Davis by enjoying one of his favorite pastimes.
Hundreds of people gathered at the Bartlesville Archery Club for a memorial shoot. Corporal Davis' brother-in-law said the family is overwhelmed by the love and support they continue to receive.
Friends said Saturday was a celebration of life—of the man Davis was whether he was in uniform, at the range or at home being the best husband and father of two children he could be.
"Kyle definitely was a loyal person,” Davis’ brother-in-law Brody Wallis said. “You know, really cared about those around him. He was a public servant. He’d definitely go out of his way to make sure that other people were taken care of first."
Davis loved bow hunting. According to Wallis, the only thing that came second to his family was his love of bow hunting.
"That was something that Kyle was really excited about when they adopted their two children was that he would be able to pass on that legacy to those kids,” Wallis said. “To see them enjoy it, I know that he would just really enjoy that.”
Wallis said there was never a dull moment when he and Davis got together.
"The topics of our conversation were centered around hunting and the outdoors and our passions there,” Wallis said. "This was really one of those things that bonded us from the beginning.”
Bartlesville Police Department Sgt. Daniel Elkins said there is a brotherhood that binds all law enforcement together.
Saying goodbye to Cpl. Davis was like losing family. He worked for the sheriff's office for the last 13 years and died in the line of duty last week from injuries he suffered during an altercation with a suspect.
Elkins wanted loved ones to know the fallen are never forgotten.
"We get the privilege, the honor, to come alongside him, his family and the community and do what he loved, and that's archery," Elkins said. "To show the family that, even though Kyle's gone, that you know we're still there. You know, that we're still there to help them and be there for them and they won't do without.”
Wallis said the outpouring of love and support is what is helping the family press forward.
“The family is just so grateful and to have this a celebration and something happy and joyful coming out of such a terrible tragedy,” Wallis said. “I think this is a good way to cap off a really tough week by having something that just really celebrates Kyle in such a good way.”
