The Oklahoma City Police Department is asking for just over $211 million for the 2022 fiscal year. The increase would be the department’s highest operating budget ever.

It's an increase of $6 million from last year when police funding was set at $204 million.

The new budget plan includes some major changes for the police department, including an emphasis on de-escalation training tactics and critical decision-making.

The department would also like an expansion to its media relations office in hopes of sharing information to the public in a quicker manner.

The new budget would also set aside $300,000 for programs to enhance mental health partnerships in the community.

Some critics argued against increasing the police department's funding in order to use the money for other things.

"I'd like to reiterate those who have lost their trust in OKCPD do not want the police to be the organization for violence intervention in the first place," meeting attendee Chris Cremin said.

The public can submit feedback via text message and email between now until May 24.

The city council will vote to whether to adopt the budget on June 8.
