Officials release new details following a police shooting that left a person dead Saturday night.

Police said officers were called to a home to enforce a protective order.  When they arrived, they found the suspect standing on the 911 caller's front lawn.

Those who live in the area said they saw an officer talking to the man when suddenly both went to the ground. That's when they heard three shots ring out.

"Just engaged him in conversation," Oklahoma City Police Department Captain Daniel Stewart said. "During the course of that, he wanted to ensure that this person did not have any weapons on him."

As the officer began checking him for weapons, the suspect refused to cooperate, leading to a struggle.

"During the course of the struggle, the officer and the person involved went to the ground," Stewart said. "During that struggle, the officer discharged his firearm, striking the subject."

The man was transported to a local hospital where he later died.  It's uncertain if the suspect was armed with any weapons, but police said Saturday wasn’t the first time officers have been called out to the home.

"Dispatch say (sic) we've been out there numerous times in reference to this individual," Stewart said.

It's undetermined why the protective order was originally filed, but Stewart said any violation of the order is an arrestable offense.

"The officer was in his rights to take him into custody," Stewart said. "He had already had a victim protection order against him."

Police believe this was a family matter. The suspect has not yet been identified.

The police officer was not injured but will be placed on administrative leave while they continue to investigate.
