OKC To Build Bus Rapid Transit System

For the first time, Oklahoma City is starting a bus rapid transit system.

This will be a lot faster than the normal city bus service.

“Buses come by the stops on platforms every 12 to 15 minutes during our peak time. There are a lot less stops along the corridor,” said Embark Director of Public Transportation Jason Ferbrache.

Thirty-two platform stops will be built on the 9-mile route in northwest OKC.

It goes up Classen and Northwest Expressway before looping back at Meridian.

Embark said it will service 91,000 jobs within a half mile of the route.

“The whole idea is to get people where they need to go as quickly and safely as we possibly can,” said Ferbrache.

Three park and ride locations will also be set up along the route and new buses will be rolling in when construction is complete.

Arrival times will also be posted at the platform stops.

Tickets can be purchased in advance through your phone.

Half of the $28 million project is being paid for through federal grants.

Construction is expected to start in June 2022 and be completed in fall 2023.
