Tulsa firefighters honored a five-year-old boy who guided rescuers to his home after it caught fire. They said his quick thinking saved his sister’s life.
It's not every day first responders can meet and bond with the people they've saved, so Wednesday afternoon was special. It was special not just for the firefighters, but for the little girl who spent weeks fighting for her life.
Jayme Prideaux never got to meet her rescuers. In fact, she doesn't remember much about the March house fire in Turley that almost took her life.
She woke up in the ICU with weeks of recovery ahead of her. The smoke scorched her vocal cords - temporarily taking away her voice. Her mom Latrisha Prideaux explained to her what happened after she recovered.
Jayme's five-year-old brother Dawson gave dispatchers the address and brought firefighters to the scene right in the nick of time.
He was awarded with a plaque for his bravery.
"Because of a five-year-old, we got to the scene quicker to do our job which made and obviously impressive result," said District 4 Fire Chief Bryan Hickerson.
Hickerson said the team of firefighters that saved Jayme got a big reward too.
"When you get to make a save, and then you get to come back and celebrate with the little girl that was there and you see that everything is great and wonderful,” Hickerson said. “She's smiling and happy and she gets to hug the guys that pulled her out, that's just a really special day for us.”
Hickerson said Dawson is likely the youngest person ever to get them to a scene.
