The main portion of the modern Greenwood district has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The 100 block of North Greenwood Avenue runs from Archer to I-244. It makes up the majority of what’s now considered the current Greenwood district.
The Oklahoma Historical Society announced the addition Thursday for the 100 Block of Greenwood Avenue.
“This district, also known as “Black Wall Street,” was the economic, cultural and professional center for Tulsa’s African American community. The 100 Block of North Greenwood Avenue helped provide a foundation for African American community building through the mid-twentieth century. It remains an important symbol of African American identity, cultural innovation and free enterprise,” the Society said in a statement.
