From Garden To Table: Farm Helps People With Developmental Disabilities Bloom

There are fresh veggies and herb seeds in the ground at Blooming Acres in Broken Arrow.

Blooming Acres employs people with developmental disabilities and autism then teaches them how to grow and sell produce. Most of the fruits and veggies are sold, but some are donated to local food banks. 

Right from the garden to your table - that is how the process at Blooming Acres works.

"Our clients are involved in the process from seeds to sales. They take a lot of pride in what we do," said Amanda Kliner with A New Leaf. 

Blooming Acres is a three-acre farm where clients at a New Leaf with developmental disabilities or autism work with job coaches who teach them how to successfully grow seasonal veggies, fruits, and herbs.

"We stuff them in as much as possible," said A New Leaf Client Michelle Hood, who was showing News On 6’s Sawyer Buccy how she packages Blooming Acres herbs. 

Clients at are a part of every piece of this process, even helping deliver fresh produce to families across the community. The work doesn't stop there.

"We also provide food to restaurants at wholesale prices, we also do donations at the end of every season to seasonal food banks," said Kliner. 

Blooming Acres is just another way A New Leaf works with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, helping them find some independence, and earn a paycheck.

"I love it! We love all the people who are out here now with us," said Client John Turner.
