Tuesday, June 15 is the deadline to file your state and federal taxes, but you can still get a last-minute extension.
Tax season was a little confusing this year in Oklahoma, with a deadline pushed back because of the pandemic, and then pushed back again by winter storms. June 15th is the last day to file taxes without extending, but even with a moved-back deadline, Certified Public Accountant Paul Hood said there's still good reason to file for an extension.
"One of the biggest pieces of advice is the extension is there to allow you to file an accurate tax return. So, there's no reason to get into a hurry," he said.
Hood said if you've already filed, you don't need to worry. He said if you haven't and think you may owe money to the IRS, an extension won't give you extra time to come up with the money.
"Now what people need to know is an extension extends the time to file, not to pay," he said.
You also might want to make sure you've got time to go to the post office, because Hood said there's another caveat in Oklahoma and states with a deadline pushed back by storms.
"Normally you can electronically file the extension. Well, the IRS came out and said they're not accepting electronically filed extensions after May 15th for these three states. So, people actually have to mail in those extension requests," Hood said.
Hood also recommends making absolutely sure that you have proof that you've mailed in the extension request or the tax documents themselves. That can mean taking pictures with a date stamp or buying a certificate of mailing at the post office.
