The Cherokee Nation Council has approved a new law to help protect its citizens.
The Council has approved an anti-harassment law, protecting members from threats of violence.
A Cherokee Nation judge may grant a temporary anti-harassment protection order if threats to the person are credible.
The existing law specifically protected victims of recent domestic violence, family or household members and law enforcement and court-related positions, but it did not extend protections to victims of serious harassment by strangers.
