Applications are still being accepted for the Junior Police Academy hosted by the Broken Arrow Police Department.

The program is designed to give the city’s youth an inside look at how the law enforcement process works.

The academy was canceled last year because of COVID-19 but is returning for the full week of July 26th. The program is targeted for 6th-12th grade students.

Participants will experience different aspects of law enforcement, including how traffic stops are conducted, the fingerprinting process and lessons from detectives and crime scene investigators. The Grand River Dam Authority is also bringing its water rescue boat and helicopter during one of the days.

The experience is designed to bring transparency to the city’s youth and could help spark interest in a potential career.

“If we can reach out and have a better relationship with the young people in our community, we’ll get along better,” said Officer Chris Walker, Broken Arrow Police. “They will see how we function and why we function that way, and hopefully recruit a few along in the process.”

Organizers said there about 10 spots left. Applications can be found HERE
