The American Red Cross is experiencing a nationwide blood shortage, and healthcare workers said in the summertime, the need for blood donors is even higher.
Janice Wofford said she tries to donate platelets every other Monday.
"Who knows, mine might be the one to help somebody's family with cancer," said Wofford.
She said she's seen the inside of the hospital a lot in 20 years. First, when her father had cancer and then again when her son had several surgeries. That's what pushed her to begin donating.
"Every time he has surgery I was able to do direct donation. Sometimes if we didn't use the blood during his surgery then the family behind us needed it. When you have a family member that either needs blood or platelets you're very appreciative," said Wofford.
The shelves at the American Red Cross are significantly less than what they need.
"The severe need really started about 90 days ago, when we saw over that time period about 75,000 more requests for blood products from our hospitals on a national basis than we were anticipating," said Jan Hale with the American Red Cross.
Hale said there are several reasons for the increase, but they're also seeing fewer donors than they need to keep up with the higher demand. She said they are hoping to see more people donating to help fill the need.
"It's definitely worth it at the end of the day to take that out, and when you think, especially that could be the one to really help somebody's family that is battling cancer," said Wofford.
