After more than a year, Tulsa's downtown walking tours are making a return this weekend.
The Tulsa Foundation for Architecture is kicking off Second Saturday Tours with one called Tulsa Sound, happening in the Arts District.
Organizers said there is so much interest in the return of these tours, they've already sold out of tickets, but you can still join the waitlist. They said there is a good chance of getting in one of the tour groups.
Tulsa Sound tour groups will begin the two-hour walking tour at Cain's Ballroom. It's the first tour Tulsa's Foundation for Architecture has organized in 17 months.
“I was a little rusty in everything I had to do, but it’s just so exciting when people call and they have questions about Tulsa, this is a way that we get to share the architecture and the history and just some of the fun stuff about Tulsa,” said Ellen Stanley.
Stanley leads the tours and said the original plan was for the Tulsa Sound tour to happen last year, but the pandemic got in the way. She's excited to share the music and history of Tulsa's artists.
“There is a song about living on Tulsa time. It’s all about the music in Tulsa and this tour just kind of gives you a little hint of that in several different places," said Stanley.
Stanley said after Cain's, the groups will head to 108 Contemporary to see a new exhibit feature on string instruments. She expects visitors to enjoy one of the guitars on display.
“Which is made by a luthier who lives near Stillwater and he has constructed the guitar using the original floor of Cain’s Ballroom. So, you can actually see evidence of people’s years of dancing on the floor," said Susan Baley, Executive Director of 108 Contemporary
Baley said this exhibit was supposed to happen last year. She said there is a lot for visitors to see while the exhibit is on display.
If you're interested in the walking tours, Stanley said you can expect to see some new additions, like a tour in Sapulpa and more.
“The tunnel tour is always just a little different and honestly if you have a different guide each time, you’re going to learn a little something different. We also have a brand-new tour for November called Thanks George and it is about the George Kaiser family foundation and what they have done for Tulsa," said Stanley.
