Classes begin August 18 for Jenks Public Schools, and they are preparing to welcome kids back safely as COVID-19 cases continue to climb.

Jenks Public Schools said the district learned a lot from last year, which helped them plan for this year.

The newly-released plan includes notifying parents if their child was within six feet of someone who tests positive for COVID-19, tracking positive cases in the district and updating the numbers every Friday online, as well as requiring students and staff who test positive to stay home for 10 days

Just like last year, parents can choose for their students to stay in virtual learning or attend class in-person. High school students can also choose a blended option.

"We learned a few lessons last year for fully virtual option, and our people in-house have done some really great work in streamlining that option, making it easier to understand for parents," Jenks Public Schools Director of Communications Rob Loeber said.

Masks will be available for all students and staff but the district cannot require them unless the governor declares a state of emergency.

The district will also disinfect buses after they run their morning and afternoon routes. They said it's a good idea for parents to monitor their kids every day.

"If they're showing symptoms, keep them home. If they test positive, obviously keep them home," Loeber said.
