The Quinton Police Chief is on paid leave until further notice after his legal history was brought to light in court documents.
A Pittsburg County Judge ruled the chief, Lawrence “Larry” Ruiz Jr., “lacks credibility” which means he cannot testify in court. Monday’s ruling led to the town’s board of trustees calling for an executive session to discuss Ruiz’s employment during the Aug. 12 meeting.
At the meeting, 79-year-old Margret Kendrick demanded accountability.
News On 6 obtained Ruiz’s body camera video from September 2020. It shows Kendrick and Ruiz arguing over Kendrick not wearing a seatbelt, then Ruiz arresting Kendrick on suspicion of obstruction.
“The man is not worthy of the uniform he wears,” said Ruiz.
During the course of Kendrick’s case, her attorney learned some things about Ruiz’s legal past. The judge ruled Ruiz was not a credible witness, given the past felonies against him, even though they were ultimately dismissed.
Kendrick’s attorney, Brecken Wagner, also represents Ruiz’s ex-girlfriend, who filed for a protective order against Ruiz on July 29.
“He should never work in law enforcement again,” said Breckner. “You cannot have that background and be responsible.”
Still, there are some residents, like Justin Adcock and Jeremy Franklin, who support Ruiz and want him to stay as chief.
“He’s the best thing that’s ever happened to Quinton,” said Adcock.
“If he was given a chance, he needs to stay,” said Franklin. “I think it’s on the council for not doing a full investigation.”
There has been no acting police chief named.
The next meeting is Sept. 9, but trustees could call for an emergency meeting before then.
