The Owasso Fire Department is welcoming a new addition to the team. A dog breeder from Edmond is donating a puppy to serve as a therapy dog.

It's week one of Fahren's new role with the Owasso Fire Department and he's already fitting in.

“He’s become my shadow so far and just follows me around the station and he’s just the cutest addition to our family. So it’s been awesome," said Arami Goldstein.

Goldstein is Owasso's Assistant Fire Chief and Fahren's human mom. She said the puppy is learning the basics for now, like sitting on command, but he's also bringing comfort to people around town.

“We went to city hall. One of our assistants down there had lost her dog the day before and I didn’t know and started crying when she saw him and was able to love on him. The impact that he’ll have will not just be the fire department, but it’ll be the whole city in general," said Goldstein.

The breeder just brought him to Owasso and is donating Fahren to a partnership between Owasso Fire Department and Anthem Service Dogs.

“Dogs are a really great resource they are really grounding for people. They help you cope with certain traumas that have happened in your life, they could be little they could be big," said Kate Friedl.

Friedl is the executive director of the non-profit and knows the impact therapy dogs can have on the mental health of first responders.

“EMS is on the hard spectrum of bad things that happen to people and they have to deal with that in one way or another and therapy dogs have been proven to be a really great resource of helping people cope with those things," said Friedl.

Fahren isn't just going to serve as a therapy dog for the paramedics and firefighters, he's also here to help the community.

“Everyone knows that a puppy or a dog brings positivity and for that second you might forget about that negativity and it might bring you that comfort that you need in your darkest of times and so that’s our hope is that he brings joy," said Goldstein.
