Summer pests are causing more problems than usual for many around Northeast Oklahoma. Many pest control businesses are working overtime as Army worms wreak havoc on people's homes.
Taylor Reed with Mother Nature's Pest Control said this summer has been a constant grind for the business.
"This time of year, can be very stressful around here," Reed said. "The technicians are running from seven in the morning to 8:30 at night."
Army worms are bugs that look like caterpillars. While they may seem harmless, they can cause some serious damage to yards.
Reed said just a few of these critters can tear down an entire lawn; hence the name Army Worms.
"It's one of those, when we get calls, we get out there pretty quickly," Taylor said.
At first glance, infested yards may just look like they need more water. But when you take a closer look, you'll see bugs crawling around and you'll know you're dealing with a much bigger issue.
"A lot of pests, once you see one, there's going to be a lot more," Taylor said. "It's just a matter of time."
Melanie Reed said she's glad her neighbor warned her about Army Worms. She got her yard treated just in time.
"We were just kind of nervous that they were going to completely destroy it," Melanie said.
Experts said over-the-counter items like insect killers could provide some temporarily help. But they say to not wait long to get help.
"A lot of times with those over-the-counter products, it's kind of like a maintaining of it," Reed said. "But once you have a big infestation, it's best to call a professional."
