Tulsa Public Schools students are heading back to class as normal Wednesday after an unprecedented two semesters last year.

Last year, TPS spent most of both semesters in virtual learning, only coming back in spring to a partial in-person schedule. This year all TPS students are returning as normal.

Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist said in part “The district’s expectation is that every adult and student - regardless of vaccination status - wears a mask at all times indoors and outdoors when in the presence of others.”

However, wearing a mask while on campus is voluntary due to State Bill 658, but all students do need to wear a mask while on all school buses.

The district is encouraging parents to remind their kids about frequent hand washing, monitoring the student’s symptoms at home if they have any, and wearing a mask as much as possible

Students have a virtual schooling option if they choose, but the district said most students are returning in person.

The district tells us they will closely monitor all positive cases within the Tulsa Public Schools and will take action at each individual school if need be.

Students we have spoken with say they are excited to return to school since it will provide a sense of normalcy in their lives that they haven’t had in more than a year.

Will Rogers Student Lexy Palmer said, “It’s very hard to deal with but I’m grateful I get my senior year I feel like that is more special...leaving as a sophomore and coming back as a senior is kind of insane”

Some of the schools are upholding traditions and back-to-school celebrations for the first day this year. Will Rogers High School has invited all seniors for a “Senior Sunrise” event to kick off the year with their friends as a way to return to some normal activities.

“It’s emotional, I’ve been with these seniors for all four years. I’ve watched them grow up. It’s amazing that they get to be together today and start the year in person after such a hard year," said senior class sponsor and TPS teacher Stephanie Buck.

The district says it hopes to stay in classes in-person, but if they need to make adjustments based on COVID case numbers, they will.
