Tulsa Firefighters have made a 12-year-old boy who recently died from cancer an honorary firefighter. They tell News On 6's Sawyer Buccy this is the least they can do for the boy's family and hope it inspires other departments to continue doing Something Good.

Ladder 66 has an angel on board.

"It is no surprise that firefighters hate cancer- we have lost a lot of people after retirement from cancer. We have a firefighter who started a charity for children with cancer- it is something that affects our job, so it is kind of personal," said Andy Little with Tulsa Fire.

That angel is 12-year-old Nick Reid.

"He had had cancer for a while, it was a rare form of cancer- it had spread to some vital organs, and he was able to go home and spend the end of his battle with his family," said Little.

Nick's grandmother who lives in Muskogee told Little; her grandson wanted to be a firefighter when he grew up just like his dad.

Nick passed away from a rare form of liver cancer before he got the chance to grow up and live his dreams.

"It is not supposed to happen that way. Parents are not supposed to see their children suffering, they are not supposed to have to say goodbye to their children. It is really a small thing we can do to let them know that he mattered," said Little.

The guys and girls of Tulsa Fire made sure Nick's dream came true. Nick has his own nameplate on Ladder 66. There is also a Tulsa Flag flying over the station that will be going straight to Nick's family.

"Captain Mosby and his crew were excited to be able to honor Nick. In some way I am sure he probably felt like he was looking after them," said Little.

A Tulsa Firefighter created a non-profit called Hydrants of Hope that helps support kids in our area going through cancer. If you would like to donate, click HERE.
