Three people were killed in a wrong-way crash involving two cars on the 91st Street exit ramp near Highway 169, police said. Investigators said a portion of the highway was closed for nearly four hours on Monday night.
Lt. Darren Bristow, Tulsa Police, said a woman driving a gray BMW was going the wrong way up the 91st Street exit ramp and crashed into a white sedan with a man and woman inside. Investigators said all three of the people were killed instantaneously because of the high speed of the crash.
Lt. Bristow said the car with two passengers caught fire but a good Samaritan helped pull the bodies out before the car was fully engulfed in flames.
“A passerby, a nurse on her way to work, got out,” said Lt. Bristow. “Two officers and the nurse extracted two individuals from the white car that was southbound.”
Police said southbound traffic was diverted onto 81st and Highway 169 while investigators spent hours at the scene. The highway is now open and traffic is moving normally.
Investigators said the state medical examiner will do a toxicology report on all three people as part of the investigation. The names of the people involved have not been released.
