A two-year-old boy is in the hospital fighting COVID-19, at one point he was on a ventilator.
His mom said he's been through a lot already in his life, but this has been the worst.
Makayla Hunziker said her two-year-old boy Grayson is a funny, easy going kid. She said he’s a daddy's boy and loves his dogs, but she also knows he's a fighter.
"He just has been through so much, and it just stings because kids don't deserve to go through this, especially him," Hunziker said.
Grayson has been in and out of the hospital his entire life. His mom said he suffers from seizures, has diabetes insipidus and parts of his brain didn't develop fully.
Hunziker said while they have battled so many different things, getting COVID has been the hardest.
"It's just one of those things you would think never happens to you, but it does, it really happens to people," Hunziker said.
Hunziker said Grayson tested positive on July 19th and has been in the hospital since July 24th.
She said he was on a ventilator and an ECMO machine for two weeks, and even coded twice.
"They asked us do you want us to keep trying to save him or do you want us to terminate what we're doing and just let him go," Hunziker said. "I was just sitting on his bed, hugging him, crying, I wish there was a way, I wish there was a way I could explain to him what was going on.”
Hunziker said being on the ECMO machine did make Grayson stronger, and he's now getting a little better every day.
She said it's been an honor to watch God work through him.
"He's such like a bubbly, sweet little soul," she said.
