Hundreds of people are closer to finding an affordable place to live. The Tulsa Housing Authority held a leasing fair on Thursday where people applied for apartments.

Michael Gbolokai and his wife are in the process of moving to Tulsa from North Dakota to attend school. Today he applied for affordable housing at the Tulsa housing authority's leasing fair.

"It’s going to help me because I know I’m going to be in school, my wife is going to be in school, as well and my kids," Gbolokai said.

Gbolokai said having a place to stay will allow him to focus on getting good grades. "For me and my family it is going to be a good blessing," Gbolokai told News on 6. Tammy Dardwell with THA says they meet a lot of people who desperately need a roof over their heads.

"Many of these families are homeless they have nowhere to call their own. So that is a huge issue here in Tulsa," Dardwell explained.

Thursday, THA took applications for 3-, 4-, and 5-bedroom units at Sandy Park and Apache Manor Apartments.

Each apartment was recently renovated.

"So we’re hoping that getting people into a safe stable secure home they are able to then put that mental bandwidth towards things that can really brighten their future," said Ginny Hensley with THA.

Hensley said the need for affordable housing is growing by the day. "It’s only going to increase certainly with the eviction moratorium ending," Hensley added.

Hensley says they took more than 150 applications today. Each applicant will be immediately selected and reviewed online. You can continue to apply here at tulsahousing.org.
