As the Labor Day Holiday Weekend is here, the Grand River Dam Authority reminds people to stay safe when out there on the water this weekend.

"We expect on Labor Day Weekend people to be out all day and all night, and we just ask them to play it safe when they do come," Alberty said.

GRDA officials said they expect lakes and rivers to be packed this year as people look for ways to have fun while social distancing. With a packed lake, there are several things to remember.

They remind people to always drink responsibly when out on the lake.

"Drinking and boating are things that just don't really mix. Key reason they don't mix is that you need all your faculties about you when you're operating a boat," Alberty said.

Alberty said it's extremely important to make sure you are in control of your boat and always watching your speed.

He said he expects heavy traffic this weekend so being aware of your surroundings is crucial.

"If you're going to be out doing floating or you're going to be doing tubing or skiing, or things like that, there's plenty of room to get out there and get away from other boats," Alberty said.

He said one of the most important tips is to wear your life jacket and make sure it fits properly.

"Unfortunately, when we have a drowning or an incident, we've never had one where somebody had their lifejacket on. So, we really stress wearing your life jacket," Alberty said.

The GRDA also urges lake goers to know the rules of the lake and make a float plan.

Alberty said if you have any emergencies on the water do not hesitate to reach out to the authorities.

"If they've got their cell phone, dial 911. If they don't have their cell phone with them, they can always call on marine band channel 16 and they will get you in touch with one of our GRDA officers,” Alberty said.

GRDA officials will be out in full force on the lakes and the river as well.
