Tulsa Surgeon Has Unique Perspective On Breast Cancer

The diagnosis of breast cancer can be overwhelming, but for one Tulsa doctor, she understands how that news can impact the entire family.

Laurie Flynn knew she wanted to be a doctor since she was four years old, but it was in med school when her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, she knew she wanted to be a breast surgeon.

"I decided that I wanted to go into a career that was in the field of surgery but I wanted to be able to help women like my mom get the treatment that they needed but also be able to fill in that gap and be that female support for them during that progress and that journey," said Dr. Flynn.

So now, she is part of the Chapman Breast Center at Ascension St John, seeing patients at the beginning of their journey from mammogram and ultrasound all the way to more advanced treatments.

As a daughter of a breast cancer survivor, Dr. Flynn knows what families are going through when they've been diagnosed with breast cancer.

"I'm at high risk so because of my family history, I have to have the once-a-year mammogram," said Dr. Flynn "I have to have the once-a-year MRI and so I feel like I'm sort of deep in it myself even though I haven't had breast cancer. I still know what that means to have the twice a year imaging so I'm part of it too."

Dr. Flynn is passionate about taking care of women and their breast health and she encourages anyone who thinks they may have an issue, not to wait, but get in and get checked.

Dr. Flynn has participated in the Komen Race for the Cure in the past and says it is a great way to celebrate survivors and remember those who've lost their battle, while also raising money to help find a cure.

The opening ceremony for the race will take place on Saturday, September 25th at 8:30 a.m. At 9 a.m., the survivor parade will begin and the race will kick off at 9:30 a.m.
