A new study shows a serious ambulance shortage in rural America.

Census data shows that nearly 60 million Americans live in rural areas, which is a fifth of the total population.

A study from the Rural Policy Institute found that long distances and challenging terrain in those areas make emergency response times longer.

There is also a lack of funding and EMS planners to coordinate services.

The USDA Economic Research Service estimates 1.3 million Oklahomans live in rural areas.
