The Tulsa Dream Center is launching a new program to pair mentors with high school students.
"You may go around your neighborhood and there's not plenty of kids saying, "I'm going to college, I'm doing this, I'm starting this career" that may look like you, but it does not mean that you cannot achieve that," said Keege Elliott, founder of 'The Overcomers Program.'
The new program will focus on personal, spiritual and life skill development for high school students.
It will also focus on the students' identities.
"It's all based upon the foundation of what is their identity, who do they see themselves as, and giving them the tools to grow a positive outlook of whatever that is," Elliott said.
Keege Elliot says she started the group after seeing a need among Tulsa students.
"To specifically locate and to impact kids who may not have reached the outside of this area to even see, it's possible for me to overcome this," Elliott said.
Elliott said it's more than just a typical mentorship pairing.
The mentors are chosen based on each student's interests, personal and professional goals for a meaningful relationship.
"It's going to be something that the students have, and they are going to cling to, worthwhile," said Elliott.
The program is currently accepting students from McClain, Central, Rogers, Memorial and Booker T. High Schools.
The Overcomers will meet twice a week and free transportation will be provided for students.
"We would be delighted to have every single student in Tulsa come and hanging out with us," said Elliott.
