An Owasso Police officer who died from complications of COVID-19 will be laid to rest on Monday. The public is invited to line the streets for a procession and then attend an honor service at a local church.
Officer Howard Smith, a more than 20-year veteran with Owasso Police, died last Monday. For the last week, people in town have left cards, flowers and toys on his patrol car parked outside police headquarters.
In his two decades with Owasso Police, Smith trained new officers, was a pepper ball instructor and an assistant SWAT commander. Smith is the second Owasso police officer to die of COVID-19 complications in the last few weeks.
An honor service is set for 9:42 a.m. on Monday morning at Owasso’s First Baptist Church. The time selection is a reflection of Officer Smith’s badge number.
The Owasso Police Department is asking the public to line the streets for a police procession from Mowery Funeral Home near 96th Street and Garnett to the church at 8:30 a.m. After the ceremony, another procession will escort Officer Smith to his final resting place in Shawnee.
The service will be streamed online, Click Here to watch.
