There is a new effort to bring attention to the "Tulsa Global District" near 21st and Garnett.

Businesses there are now getting more resources, as a newly-formed group is working to revitalize and highlight the area.

The Tulsa Global District officially became a nonprofit last month. Those involved told News On 6 there are about 200 businesses in this area, and there is teamwork between the city and volunteers to help everyone thrive.

21st and Garnett is a busy, diverse area, with international grocery stores, restaurants, auto repair shops, tax and insurance businesses and everything in between.

Ana Ibarra, whose family owns all the Supermercados Morelos grocery stores in Oklahoma, told News On 6 she is amazed how much the area has grown since this location opened in 2005.

"It's really helped us out, where we can work locally, so we don't have to outsource from other places, and we can help out our own people," said Ibarra.

Ibarra and Mauricio Dominguez are board members of the Tulsa Global District.

"The area needs a lot of love, and so what we're trying to do is not only beautify it, bring economic development but also promote the area, promote the local businesses," explained Dominguez.

The nonprofit said it works with the city to help business owners overcome language barriers, as well as learn about resources and ways to grow.

Luisa Krug with the Tulsa Planning Office said since the area recently became part of the city's "Main Streets" program, it will get about $50,000 per year.

"Creating even stronger relationships with different city departments would be great to just make sure like investments are kind of helping to realize the vision of the community," said Krug.

Krug said plans include hiring an executive director, as well as adding grants, murals, events and more.

Those involved said they hope the Tulsa Global District becomes a household name and popular destination.

The Tulsa Global District is looking for artists to install four murals to highlight the diversity of the area.

Submissions are due October 22nd. You can find more details here.
