Ascension St. John’s Comprehensive Breast Center has been open for three months and medical officials say they are busier than expected, especially with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Doctors say they expect to do at least 500 mammograms just this month alone, which is 20 percent higher than usual.
The Comprehensive Breast Center opened on July 26 as a one-stop-shop for all needs when it comes to preventive breast health. Radiology Manager Kim Armstrong said they offer services such as mammograms, MRIs, bone density tests, and much more.
“It’s the easiest way for us to detect any kind of precancerous area and the sooner you find out about them the sooner you can get it taken care of,” Armstrong said.
Armstrong said they have already done more than 2,200 mammograms so far since opening day and are proud to say that they are overwhelmed in the best way with appointment requests.
She tells us right now they are scheduling appointments three weeks from the request date at their Utica location but you can schedule at other locations on the day of the request. Armstrong said typically they like to keep scheduling under a week, but the high volume of requests has them backed up.
Armstrong tells us October’s Breast Cancer Awareness campaign helps to remind women to schedule a mammogram.
“It’s always important to stay on routine,” Armstrong said. “It’s real easy to miss a year here and there but things grow and happen so quickly the earlier you can get it detected the earlier you can get it taken care of.”
If you would like to schedule your mammogram or any other preventative testing you can call 918-744-3511 to make an appointment at any of the Ascension locations.
