Yukon Voters Say Yes To Nearly $200 Million In School Bonds

Yukon voters have said yes to two school bond proposals totaling nearly $200 million. 

Leaders with Yukon Public Schools are calling this a big win for students, staff and the community.  

"I am so thrilled the community has passed this with a 70%. Thank you, thank you thank you. I am going to get emotional; I thank you for the kids, I thank you for the staff," Superintendent Jason Simeroth said in a video posted on Facebook. 

The two bond proposals will not add to Yukon resident’s taxes. This bond picks up where the old tax ended.  

The district said this money will be used on several major projects. That includes getting new textbooks and building a new performing arts center and college and career center. 

"The high school component of it will include the 1500 hundred seat auditorium that will actually be on our campus currently its located over on the middle school," said Yukon High School Band Director Diana Williams. 

Some of the money will be used to remodel elementary and middle school classrooms.  

Simeroth said the new facilities could bring in more sales tax revenue for the community because of the ability to host more events. 

Both bonds passed with more than 70% of people voting yes.
