Experts Recommend COVID-19 Booster Ahead Of Thanksgiving Celebrations

Medical officials say the winter COVID-19 surge is here as hospitalizations, ICU admission and positive cases continue to grow. 

In an effort to combat the growing numbers, health professionals are urging all adults to get their booster shots following approval from the FDA and CDC. 

To get your Pfizer or Moderna booster shot, you must be over 18 years old and have waited 6 months since your second dose of the vaccine. For the Johnson & Johnson shot, you only need to wait two months. 

The booster shots have been proven to boost your protection levels even higher than your initial shot. 

While the immunity from previous infections and vaccination dwindles over time, experts say this does not mean the vaccine is ineffective.  

"People have not questioned the ER for years. If they step on a nail, they go and get a tetanus shot from the emergency room. I am trying to highlight why we are surprised that two shots of the covid19 shot do not give you lifelong protection. Most vaccines do not," said Dr. Dale Bratzler with OU Health.  

Doctors say getting vaccinated, skipping large indoor gatherings, and wearing your mask will offer you and others the best protection this Thanksgiving. 

Health officials also say it's best to wait to travel if you are not fully vaccinated.
