Experts say the holiday season can sometimes have a negative impact on people's mental health.

The National Alliance on Mental Health says 64% of people with mental illnesses say the holidays season makes their conditions worse.

Experts say the stress of Christmas shopping and not having the best family situation can cause increased anxiety and depression.

They say people can take better care of their mental health by managing their stress and prioritizing quality time with family instead of worrying about buying the perfect gift.

Doctor Stevan Lahr with Family and Children services says it's important to take care of yourself first before anyone else.

"Just because it's the holidays, doesn't really mean that it's a magic season where we can't keep doing everything that we know that we need to be doing to keep healthy," Lahr said. "So, sticking to a good sleep schedule. Making sure that we're somewhat staying somewhat on track with our healthy diet."

The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services says anyone who needs help can call 211.
