If you’re looking for unique gifts this season, you can check out a German holiday market this weekend.

Chriskindlmarkt has been going on in Tulsa for 25 years, modeled after traditional Christmas markets in Germany. Visitors can't help but be in the holiday spirit with the twinkly lights, the smell of food coming from the kitchen and the holiday decorations.

"We try to make it as authentic German atmosphere as we can,” said Carol Wright, with the German American Society of Tulsa.

Sights, scents, and sounds of Christmas echo through the German American Society Event Center. While you're strolling through the market, you can try authentic foods like schnitzel and strudel.

Visitors can taste German heritage from roasted nuts to Gluehwein, a warm spiced wine.

"So if you were in Germany this time of the year or walking around in Europe, you'd be drinking your wine this way,” said Karen Stobaugh with Whispering Meadows Vineyards and Winery.

People filled the floors of Christkindlmarkt within minutes of opening on Friday.

One of those shoppers was Rosie Storm. She came with her German friend of 50 years, and says she feels like part of the culture too.

"Every time we can, we try to come to this because they have wonderful stuff,” Storm said.

There are two floors of booths local artisans, crafters and vendors selling handmade and locally made items, along with imported German goods.

"You just can't find things like you can here. You really can't and that's why I like that they're all unique. They're all different and that's what I love about coming here,” Storm said.

There's something for all ages, and kids can meet Saint Nikolaus.

"Seeing some of the same people every year that come back is one thing. Mostly the smiling faces and the happy people,” Wright said.

Admission is free. Christkindlmarkt is at the German American Society of Tulsa Event Center at 2301 E 15th Street.

It’s this weekend only open Friday until 7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
