The Healthier Oklahoma Coalition says new research from Stanford University is a breakthrough in understanding COVID-19 and obesity.

Scientists took fatty tissue from people who died of COVID-19 and also from living people during surgery who did not have COVID.

Doctor Stan Schwartz with Well OK said the virus-infected cells in the fatty tissue. The infection could explain why people who are overweight have higher chances of severe illness from COVID-19.

Doctor Schwartz says the finding could be big but still needs to be validated.
