For most people, the holiday season is a joyous time of year, but health experts say it can also be a difficult season for those who are struggling with addiction and could turn dangerous.
Addiction experts say that recovery can be hard enough and the holidays bring new challenges.
One expert is explaining ways to support someone in recovery so they can stay on track and enjoy the season.
Dr. Kelly Dunn said this time of year can increase isolation and loneliness for those struggling with addiction.
She said one of the best things you can do for your loved ones is to try to understand what they are going through and be empathetic.
She said during this time of year people drink and use substances to celebrate but she says there are other ways to celebrate.
She says it's a good time to reflect on those precious childhood memories and look back to what you used to love.
Alternatives to drinking and using:
Dr. Dunn says the best thing you can do is just be there for your loved ones this season.
"Bring your kindness, bring your empathy, pair it with the science we have to offer for your loved one and they'll be able to really experience transformation and change," said Dunn.
Dr. Dunn said caregivers shouldn't forget to care for themselves because you need to be as healthy as you can be to help a loved one suffering from addiction.
