A new report shows 2021 was the deadliest year on record for U.S. law enforcement and COVID was largely to blame.
The National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum reports that there were 458 law enforcement deaths. That was up about 55% from 2020.
Of those, 301 deaths, about 65% of all deaths, were the result of COVID-19.
The second-leading cause was gunshots, which accounted for 62 deaths.
58 died in traffic crashes.
