The OKC Thunder and Cleveland Cavaliers game paid homage to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy. OKC Thunder said it was only right to invite a special young man from here in Oklahoma to be part of it.
“We have a very special young man with us here tonight who really personifies the whole idea of treating your fellow man or woman well and his name is Dayvon Johnson,” Christine Berney, OKC Thunder’s vice president of community engagement said.
11-year-old Dayvon Johnson and several of his family members traveled from Muskogee to the Paycom Center.
In December, the Muskogee County Sheriff's Office named Johnson an honorary deputy after he performed the Heimlich maneuver on another student who was choking. Then, he helped a woman using a walker get out of a house on fire.
“I was pretty scared, but I know you have to calm. It's important to say something because you never know when you can be in that situation,” Johnson said.
On top of attending his first game, the surprises didn't stop there. Fans got on their feet as Johnson was surprised with presented a Thunder hammer and jersey. OKC Thunder said in many ways Johnson is a hero like Dr. King and they want to see him continue serving his community.
“I don't think of myself different than others, but I guess they can call me a hero,” Johnson said.
Johnson wants to be an emergency medical technician one day. EMTs at the game thanked Johnson for helping them out that day and gave him a coin for his acts of courage.
